Season: 2021

Angels @ Oddsox

game highlights

Both of the Oxford League stalwarts were without some of their regular players as the game was played on a Thursday.  In fact, the number of spectators at the game may have outnumbered the players.  The Oddsox fielded an all female left-side of the infield, and due to a surplus of female players for the Angels (what a great problem to have!) Emily played as a male for the evening.  The Oddsox strategy proved wise, as Rachael earned MVP honours for her defensive efforts and Katie had another solid game at shortstop.  Babs rolled back the years and proved once again why she is most women’s softball idol by playing a fabulous game at 2B, being 1/2 of the game’s only double play being just 1 of her highlights.  Both outfields fielded well and caught fly balls when possible, and kept most of the others in front.  JP covered the 1/3 of the earth not covered by water and seemingly was involved in almost every play.  The Angels started off well with 5 runs in the top of the 1st, only for the Oddsox to respond with 5 of their own in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the game at 7 apiece.  From there on, either team would score more than 2 runs in an inning only once.  The Angels scored 5 more in the top of the 5th, which coupled with some clutch 2 out HRs proved to be the difference and the Angels came out on top, 18 – 11.  The result was a welcome birthday present to the Angels Co-Captain, Jen.  Thanks to Tom from the Tigers who did a cracking job his first time as umpire.

Mavericks @ Angels

game highlights

The Angels and Mavericks know each other very well, potentially too well in some cases, so Tuesday’s game was always going to be interesting. Both teams came out of the box swinging, and after 1 inning the score was tied at 6. The Angels continued to tack on, scoring a few runs in each of the following innings. However the Mavericks could not keep up the scoring pace with the blinding low sun, and the game finished after 6 1/2. Highlights were Bertie shouting “I got it!” and the ball landed 5-10 metres away…. Monique being her usual self and annoyingly stopping everything at 3rd. She clearly has been training with James as he also made plenty of outs to first from the pitching rubber. Lucy also had a hit over the head of her Brookes Softball coach to start a 2 out rally. Both teams made their fair share of catches in the outfield, an exceptional catch was from Amy who charged in and made a basket catch. Selina also caught a tricky popup over the catcher’s head. 3 new female Angels also had doubles on merit showing their improvement. Everything added to a very enjoyable game (helped by Winston not barking continuously for once) and miraculously the Angels game was not the last one to be completed!

Tigers @ Oddsox

Game highlights

The game started quite close with both teams racking up runs in the 1st inning, and getting quick outs in the next two. Oddsox continued with their typically tight fielding, and found the holes in Tigers’ defence to score some home runs and take a strong lead. Tigers managed to stop Oddsox short of a mercy in the 4th and 5th and shut them out in the 6th, just scraping through to the 7th – but were unable to make much of a dent in the lead.

The Oddsox defence also made it hard for Tigers to pick out MVPs, but Rachael clinched it with a few outs at 3B and a great throw to 1B, and Johnny with consistently good pitching, and a catch in the outfield. For Tigers, Julie caught just about everything she could on 1B, and the other MVP was probably awarded for entertainment value – taking one catch on about the third attempt and dropping another whilst faceplanting. In my defence, I barely slept the night before! A shout out to Clint for stepping in to pitch for Tigers in the 5th. And thanks to Stella for sterling work umpiring when she could have been playing!

Most Valuable Players

Tigers: Julie Sutton and Tom Martin
Oddsox: Rachael Monteiro and Johnny Sullivan
