game highlights

Both of the Oxford League stalwarts were without some of their regular players as the game was played on a Thursday.  In fact, the number of spectators at the game may have outnumbered the players.  The Oddsox fielded an all female left-side of the infield, and due to a surplus of female players for the Angels (what a great problem to have!) Emily played as a male for the evening.  The Oddsox strategy proved wise, as Rachael earned MVP honours for her defensive efforts and Katie had another solid game at shortstop.  Babs rolled back the years and proved once again why she is most women’s softball idol by playing a fabulous game at 2B, being 1/2 of the game’s only double play being just 1 of her highlights.  Both outfields fielded well and caught fly balls when possible, and kept most of the others in front.  JP covered the 1/3 of the earth not covered by water and seemingly was involved in almost every play.  The Angels started off well with 5 runs in the top of the 1st, only for the Oddsox to respond with 5 of their own in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the game at 7 apiece.  From there on, either team would score more than 2 runs in an inning only once.  The Angels scored 5 more in the top of the 5th, which coupled with some clutch 2 out HRs proved to be the difference and the Angels came out on top, 18 – 11.  The result was a welcome birthday present to the Angels Co-Captain, Jen.  Thanks to Tom from the Tigers who did a cracking job his first time as umpire.

Game highlights

Tigers struggled to get going in the early evening heat, but Beavers had no such issues, moving runners round bases and mixing in a few home runs, scoring 4 in each of the first 3 innings, then getting a 7-run mercy for a 19-5 lead. But Tigers were finding their feet, and took the 5th 4-0, only for Beavers to do the same in the 6th. Tigers started the 7th well, and got a 3 RBI home run (from borrowed pitcher Norm), but a couple of quick outs, (largely thanks to Beavers’ borrowed pitcher Katie), stopped them at 4 to end the game. The rest of the Beavers’ defence played their parts too, with the catcher, centre fielders and shortstop taking good catches, and Lesley was involved in plenty of outs at 1B. Tigers had their share of catches in the outfield and infield, with Charlie at 3B taking a great catch, assisting Ellie with a tag, and a perfect throw to Julie for an out at 2B, all in short succession towards the end.

Game highlights

A closely fought game tonight that could have gone either way. Some good batting and fielding by both teams kept the score at 9-7 in Oddsox favour at the end of the 3rd inning. Oddsox hit 5 home in the top of the fourth and Beavers would have done the same in the bottom, but Gen took a great play at home to tag Tom out, stop his home run and keep them at 4 runs. Oddsox pulled away in the 5th with some steady base running followed up by a home run and 3 RBIs from Jake. But Beavers were not finished and came back strongly in the 6th and 7th with solid hitting from Abi, Irving, Alejandro and Dan (definitely some home runs in there from the Beavers!) but ultimately not quite enough to take the win.

Most Valuable Players

Oddsox: Gen and Jake
Beavers: Abi and Irving
