The Mavericks started strong with an early lead and consistent hitting. Two incredible catches by the Mavericks’ Monique and Bertie earned them the title of MVP.  The Mavericks defence continued to hold the Rebels with a number of solid infield plays. The Rebels picked up their bats late in the game with home runs from James, Chris and David (on debut after not picking up a glove or a bat all year) but the Mavericks were able to hold on for the win despite the late surge of the Rebels.

Angels @ Knights

Game highlights

It was a difficult evening for batting with the ball seeming to appear out of the sun. Knights held the Angels close at the beginning due to some good outfield catches and an aggressive defensive alignment (it was 4-4 after 3). Angels started to find holes and stretched out the lead in the following innings, only for the Knights to put up a storming effort in the 7th with 13 runs! Babs stopped everything at 1st for the Angels and Pete had a diving stop at 3rd which helped to limit the damage in the 7th inning.

Most Valuable Players

Knights – Grace and Matt
Angels – Babs and Pete

Game highlights

Tigers ran off to a storming lead which the Angels managed to come back from. The game saw some great catches in left field by the Angels’ Conner, Tom and Greg. The Tigers’ defense was also notable with Cliff at centre right and Clint at shortstop making a number of plays. Offensively, Selina helped the Angels with excellent baserunning who went 1st to home, then pinch ran and went 1st to home again! Lots of new players hitting extremely well on both sides.

Game highlights

Both teams hit well with tight fielding keeping the scores very close through the bottom of the 4th inning. Two shut out innings defensively enabled the Oddsox to creep ahead and close out the game. Shout out to the Mavs’ Bertie for a sliding stop in the outfield, Monique at second and both teams members at shortstop. Oddsox outfielders Debra and Jake snagged a number of catches and a solid infield play by Rachael, Katie, Martin, Scott and Gen. Finally, hats off to the pitchers on both team who made this a great game to play in!

Tigers @ Rebels

Game highlights

Tuesday night had another really good game with great hitting led by the Rebels who got off to a hot start with James Clark hitting a grand slam in the first inning to take the team’s lead to nine.  Defensively, the Rebels kept the Tigers scoreless for the first three innings, but the Tigers fought back in the later innings with a home run and some good base running. The Tigers crept closer to the Rebels with back-to-back triples in the 6th. There were a couple of great catches deep in left field by Cliff Sofield and left centre field by Charlie Bath for the Tigers and great infield play from both teams, each picking up a double play. A couple of brilliant catches from Tom Horsfield at second base for the Rebels and some quick outs to Fiona Mounsdon on first base shut the Tigers down. The Tiger’s defense was anchored by solid play at third base by Adora Jones and second baseman Kathleen McCallen. The Rebels shortstop, James Clark, took care of a number of plays including a “will-he-won’t-he” fly ball that kept the team guessing. Special shoutouts to James Mighell from the Mavericks who stepped in to help the Rebels out with pitching and Josh May from the Rebels whose words of encouragement kept people’s spirits up as the game went on into the evening. Final thanks go to Lesley Roberts for a stellar job umpiring, despite being blinded by the setting sun!
